About Ed Barnhart

Dr. Ed Barnhart is a trailblazing American archaeologist whose groundbreaking work has been featured on the History Channel, Discovery Channel, Netflix, and other acclaimed documentaries.  As the Director of the Maya Exploration Center and a distinguished Fellow of the Explorer Club, Dr. Barnhart is one of the world’s leading experts on ancient astronomy, mathematics, and calendar systems. Over his 30-year career, Dr. Barnhart has discovered the lost city of Ma'ax Na in Belize, mapped over 4,000 ancient structures in the ancient Maya city of Palenque, and penned numerous influential articles and books. His adventurous research has taken him to extraordinary locations, from the temples of Cambodia and Easter Island to the high Andes of Peru and Bolivia. Through the Teaching Company’s Great Courses, he has delivered four immersive video courses, featuring 104 compelling lectures on ancient American civilizations. His latest projects include the ArchaeoEd Podcast and "Exploring the Mayan World," an eight-part travel series for Great Courses that invites viewers to dive deeper into the mysteries of the Maya civilization.

Dr. Barnhart is the director of Maya Exploration Center, a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to the study of ancient civilizations in the Americas and beyond.
