A new discovery that reveals why could help to boost effectiveness of the therapy and reduce related radiation sickness.Vivian Cheung at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and colleagues exposed cells from 99 healthy individuals to a dose of radiation that prompts a cellular response similar to what happens during therapy. Following the dose, the activity of caspase - an "executioner" enzyme that causes cells to self destruct - increased by between 120 and 720 per cent, confirming that people respond differently to treatment.
NASA has combined nearly 1,000 photos of the moon to build the crispest view yet of the crater-pocked lunar north pole.The space agency created the new image by stitching together slices of 983 wide-angle photographs taken by a camera on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, or LRO. The image contains a psychedelic spiral in the center because the LRO collected the images from different angles over the course of a month.A prime goal of the $583 million moon-orbiting mission is to hunt for water ice and other useful materials that may help future human explorers establish a permanent base. Just as LRO found evidence of water ice in south pole craters untouched by the sun, it may also exist in shadowed north pole craters.

An analysis of 2 million-year-old bones found in South Africa offers the most powerful case so far in identifying the transitional figure that came before modern humans -- findings some are calling a potential game-changer in understanding evolution.The bones are from Australopithecus sediba. The research places that pre-human branch of the evolutionary tree as the best candidate to be the ancestor of the human line, said Lee R. Berger of the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa.The bones, found in 2008 in the fossil-rich cave region of Malapa near Johannesburg, show a head-to-foot combination of features of Australopithecus and the human genus, Homo.
Stargazers will have the chance to see one of the brightest supernovas, or exploding stars, in decades tonight. The self-destructing star is 21m light years away from Earth but, weather permitting, is likely to be able to be seen with binoculars or a telescope after twilight.It was spotted by scientists using the Hubble Telescope at Oxford University on August 24 and is now at its maximum brightness. The supernova, known as PTF 11kly, occurred in the Pinwheel Galaxy, located in the Ursa Major constellation which is better known as The Plough.It will appear blueish-white just above and to the left of the last two stars in The Plough's handle.
New findings published Tuesday appear to undermine a controversial study - oft-cited by those who downplay the human impacts of climate change - that claimed variations in cloud cover are driving temperature changes across the globe.The analysis confirms - as most atmospheric scientists have long held - that the reverse is true: Clouds change in response to temperature changes. There is no evidence clouds can cause meaningful climate change, concluded the report's author, Andrew Dessler, an atmospheric scientist at Texas A&M University. "Suggestions that significant revisions to mainstream climate science are required are therefore not supported," he wrote.Dessler's findings are the third blow in less than a week to the research of University of Alabama, Huntsville, climatologist Roy Spencer.

WASHINGTON: Paleontologists think the Tibetan Plateau may be a cradle of evolution for the Ice Age beasts after discovering the fossil of a ancient woolly rhino that lived some 3.6 million years ago.The ancient rhino, whose remains were found in southwest Tibet , is believed to be the oldest specimen of its kind yet found and was well-adapted for a frosty life in the Himalayas about one million years before the Ice Age.
Spain's "archaic" humans some 780,000 years ago were cannibals, sure. But at least they cared enough to share their food.In the current Journal of Human Evolution, a team led by Spain's Palmira Saladié of the Institut Català de Paleoecologia Humana i Evolució Social in Tarragona, reports from Spain's Gran Dolina cave. The cave was home to the early human species, Homo antecessor, a precursor to Europe's Neanderthals. The study looks at bones in the cave to see what was for supper back then, and whether meals were shared.
Nasa released three pictures snapped over the past month by its two-year-old Lunar Reconnaissance Vehicle.The pictures provide the sharpest images yet of the Apollo 12, 14 and 17 landing sites and include a photo of the boot tracks left behind in 1972 by the last US astronaut to walk on the Moon."These images remind us of our fantastic Apollo history and beckon us to continue to move forward in exploration of our solar system," said Jim Green, director of the Planetary Science Division at Nasa Headquarters in Washington.

Rocks can be many things: they were probably our earliest weapons, they've been ballast on our journeys of exploration, even modern-art pieces. But a pair recovered from Antarctica may be the grandest application yet - tombstones for an entire world. Lunar and Planetary Institute researcher Allain Treiman believes that them to be pieces of a destroyed dwarf planet, relics from the creation of the solar system.It's relevant to questions so important that most adults don't think to ask them - why are there only eight planets? Or nine, or however many there are now? Why are they where they are? Because of all the objects that formed during the birth of the solar system, the ones we see are the ones that survived. It's likely that many small proto-planets formed as the stellar dusts condensed into larger bodies - some collided and merged, some may have been pinballed out of the system by the varying gravitational fields, and it seems that some got smashed to bits in the confusion. The existence of the asteroid belt supports such planetary pile-ups - but we can look at these antarctic rocks much closer.

A British "shaman" caught administering a potion containing a class-A hallucinogenic drug to 17 followers at a candlelit "healing" ceremony has been jailed for 15 months.Peter Aziz, of Buckfastleigh, Devon, who claims to have spent years in the jungles of Peru learning the art of making the drink ayahuasca, provided the brew, which contained N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), during a week-long retreat in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset.
Peter Aziz was jailed for providing consenting adults with a physiologically harmless substance which they took under close supervision for healing purposes ('Healer' jailed for providing drug potion, 3 September). I am an NHS doctor campaigning to see a re-emergence of psychedelic therapy in the UK. Drugs such as LSD, psilocybin (magic mushrooms), MDMA (ecstasy) and DMT (ayahuasca, as prescribed by Peter Aziz) can all be used safely with adequate preparation and under clinical conditions to improve people's lives and treat unremitting mental disorders. There is a growing wealth of scientific evidence and increasing medical support for this form of therapy. How sad therefore that another innocent bystander has been caught in the crossfire of the war on drugs.

It's from an interview in 2000 with Mike Lynch, the CEO of Autonomy and Britain's first software billionaire, currently in the process of selling his company to Hewlett-Packard for $10bn (£6bn). Lynch, who was talking about the power of the pattern recognition that forms the basis of Autonomy's success, went on to talk about the fascination of dreams, near-death experiences and the accounts of those experimenting scientifically with LSD in the 1960s: all forms of altered perception.Did psychedelic drugs play a substantive role in the development of personal computing? Restructuring the energy system without nuclear power by 2050 is in principle technologically possible and economically manageable. However, it will demand a concerted effort by the whole of society. For many exoplanet systems that have been discovered by the radial velocity method, astronomers have found excess emission in the infrared portion of the spectrum. This has generally been interpreted as remnants of a disk or collection of objects similar to our own Kupier belt, a ring of icy bodies beyond the orbit of Pluto. But as Kepler and other exoplanet finding missions rake in the candidates though transits of the parent star, astronomers began noticing something unusual: None of the exoplanet systems discovered through this method were known to have debris disks. Was this an odd selection effect, perhaps induced by the fact that transiting planets often orbit close to their parent stars, making them more likely to pass along the line of sight which could in turn, betray different formation scenarios? Or were astronomers simply not looking hard enough? A recent paper by astronomers at the Astrophysikalisches Institut in Germany attempts to answer that question.
A satellite orbiting Mars has discovered evidence that a giant crater was once a water-filled lake, scientists announced on September 2.The rare find was revealed by the presence of a delta, where flowing water has deposited sediment in a characteristic fan shape.The 40-mile wide (65-kilometer) crater is bone dry today, but is another sign of Mars' wetter ancient past, scientists said.
Nuclear physics might soon solve a long-standing Leonardo da Vinci mystery -- the fate of a lost masterpiece known as the "Battle of Anghiari."The project, one of the most ambitious in art history, involves developing a unique camera which can take photographs through a 5-inch-thick wall.The brick barrier is not just an ordinary wall. Astrophysicists believe there are two ways to trigger a Type 1a supernova. The first is when a white dwarf "steals" gas from a binary partner, grows to a certain mass limit and then explodes. New photos of the Apollo moon landing sites were released today (Sept. 6), showing extraordinary new details about the areas on the lunar surface visited by humans, including tracks left by the astronauts and their lunar rovers.In one image of the Apollo 17 landing site, the last tracks left by astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt on the moon are visible. The crisscrossing footprints can be easily distinguished from the tracks left by the astronauts' lunar rover. Since 1947, she has worked at the Crazy Horse monument to Native Americans in the Black Hills of South Dakota, where she is leading the effort to literally move a mountain."I'm tickled to death to get up every morning and go to work," Ziolkowski, president of the non-profit Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation, said in an interview this summer.Billed as the world's largest sculpture, Crazy Horse is only a 20-mile drive from better-known Mount Rushmore, where faces of presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt are carved into granite.
Tiny filaments growing from the surface of bacteria could help to improve the efficiency of uranium removal from contaminated waters.Uranium mining and atomic weapons testing during the Cold War era led to the contamination of sediments and groundwaters by toxic soluble uranium. Some clean-up methods use bacteria to solidify the uranium in sediments. But the mechanisms by which this occurs are not well understood, the US team reports in PNAS journal. As a result, control of uranium contamination is still problematic.A study by US researchers at Michigan State University has identified a group of bacteria known as Geobacter, which produces tiny protein filaments, or nano-wires, that remove the dissolved uranium from waters and precipitate it outside the cell.
In an attempt to mimic the photosynthetic systems found in plants and some bacteria, scientists have taken a step toward developing an artificial light-harvesting system (LHS) that meets one of the crucial requirements for such systems: an approximately 100% energy transfer efficiency. Although high energy transfer efficiency is just one component of the development of a useful artificial LHS, the achievement could lead to clean solar-fuel technology that turns sunlight into chemical fuel.

This network recognizes certain cancer cells using logic combinations of five cancer-specific molecular factors, triggering cancer cells destruction.Yaakov (Kobi) Benenson, Professor of Synthetic Biology at ETH Zurich, has spent a large part of his career developing biological computers that operate in living cells. FORGET hydrogen: ammonia could be the answer to developing an emissions-free fuel for cars.Ammonia produces just nitrogen and water vapour when burned and, unlike hydrogen, it is relatively easy to store in liquid form. That means transporting ammonia will not require costly new infrastructure, says John Fleming of SilverEagles Energy in Lubbock, Texas.Fleming and Tim Maxwell at Texas Tech University, also in Lubbock, are developing a system to produce ammonia that can be installed in filling stations. Powered by mains electricity, it first produces hydrogen from water using electrolysis, then combines it with nitrogen from the air to produce ammonia.
REPORTS of dolphins interacting with dead members of their pod are raising questions about whether cetaceans understand the concept of death. Bottlenose dolphins in western Greece have been seen reacting to death differently depending on whether a pod member has died suddenly or after a longer period of illness, New Scientist has learned.Interpreting animal behaviour after the death of a companion is fraught with difficulty. Death is rarely observed in the wild, and it is easy to erroneously attribute human emotions to animals. Nevertheless, several species of intelligent, social animals, such as gorillas, chimpsMovie Camera and elephants can display particular behaviours when an animal dies - behaviours which some have interpreted as akin to mourning. Taken together with a growing number of reports of cetaceans interacting with dead animals and the discovery that they have specialised neurons linked to empathy and intuition, the Greek study suggests dolphins may have a complex - and even sophisticated - reaction to death.

Scientists have used animal cells to create an artificial form of meat without the need for the rearing and slaughtering of livestock.The product, known as "in vitro meat", is made from thousands of stem cells which multiply to produce strips of muscle tissue without ever leaving the lab.Dutch scientists experimenting with pig cells say it could be just six months before the first test tube sausage is produced, and within a year lab-grown burgers could be created using similar techniques with cows.
A bacterial strain that specifically targets tumours could soon be used as a vehicle to deliver drugs in frontline cancer therapy. The strain is expected to be tested in cancer patients in 2013 says a scientist at the Society for General Microbiology's Autumn Conference at the University of York.The therapy uses Clostridium sporogenes -- a bacterium that is widespread in the soil. Spores of the bacterium are injected into patients and only grow in solid tumours, where a specific bacterial enzyme is produced. An anti-cancer drug is injected separately into the patient in an inactive 'pro-drug' form. When the pro-drug reaches the site of the tumour, the bacterial enzyme activates the drug, allowing it to destroy only the cells in its vicinity -- the tumour cells.
NASA may no longer be flying space shuttles, but it is set to put another craft into the skies ... airships.The US agency is building airships it believes will revolutionise the transport of cargo around the world, with its first prototype set to take off next year, London's Daily Telegraph reported."One of NASA's jobs is to solve the nation's air transportation challenges with research, and airships haven't seen much research in the past few decades," said Dr Pete Worden, the director of NASA research arm Ames at an airship conference in Alaska last month.
Research has found that a drug derived from the substance can thin blood and dissolve blood clots in the brain, saving lives and limiting the damage caused by strokes.Currently, patients who suffer most types of strokes need to have clot-busting injections within four hours of the attack for the treatment to work.But studies have found that jabs using a medicine derived from protein in bats' saliva can have the same effect for up to nine hours.

Researchers at IBM's Almaden, California research lab are building what will be the world's largest data array--a monstrous repository of 200,000 individual hard drives all interlaced. All together, it has a storage capacity of 120 petabytes, or 120 million gigabytes.There are plenty of challenges inherent in building this kind of groundbreaking array, which, says, IBM, is destined to be used for, as Technology Review writes, "an unnamed client that needs a new supercomputer for detailed simulations of real-world phenomena." For one thing, IBM had to rely on water-cooling units rather than traditional fans, as this many hard drives creates heat that can't be subdued in the normal manner. There's also a sophisticated backup system that senses the number of hard disk failures and adjusts the speed of rebuilding data accordingly--the more failures, the faster it rebuilds. According to IBM, that should allow it to operate with the absolute minimum of data loss, even none.
Doctors whose bodies are regularly exposed to x-rays may be adapting at the cellular level to protect themselves against radiation, according to a new study. The research hints that humans could adapt to withstand radiation exposure.In a small study, interventional cardiologists, who perform heart operations using catheters guided by x-rays, had higher levels of hydrogen peroxide in their blood, which indicates potentially harmful changes. But they also had higher levels of an antioxidant that protects against cell damage, and their white blood cells had more of an enzyme involved in programmed cell death.

The fury of blastoff, however, shrouds the scene in exceedingly bright flames and far dimmer smoke.Now, with a clever six-camera setup, NASA has found a way to see through a rocket launch or other blast. Researchers have built an image-fusing device, nicknamed "Walle," that merges the best parts of images taken by six different cameras. The combined shots offer a superhuman view of even the trickiest high-contrast scenes.
Archaeologists in contact with colleagues in Libya say that their nation's antiquities appear safe despite the chaos in the country. That news is contrary to reports earlier this week, which claimed that Libya's museums were being plundered and sites destroyed in NATO bombing raids. Libya boasts a host of ancient Phoenician and Roman sites, as well as major collections of ancient artifacts in Tripoli's Jamahiriya Museum and other smaller museums around the country. So the claims of damage prompted fears of a replay of Baghdad in 2003, when the famous Iraq Museum was looted. But Western archaeologists and Libyan sources say that there is no evidence that such destruction is taking place.
When most people think of asteroids or other objects coming near the Earth, they panic. Scientists from Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, simply aren't most people.According to a study published recently in Chinese Journal of Astronomy and Astrophysics, researcher Hexi Baoyin and his team have determined that the closer a space rock gets to our planet, the better. They assert that an asteroid orbiting the Earth could be a rich source of minerals ripe for mining, and according to reports, have even come up with a possible scenario that would enable scientists to rein in the rock.As noted in Syfy's Dvice blog , Baoyin and others are "optimistic that they could tweak the orbit of a near-Earth asteroid by just enough (a change in velocity of only about 1,300 feet-per-second or so) to get it to temporarily enter Earth orbit at about twice the distance as the Moon."

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- U.S. astronomers say they've discovered the first pair of supermassive black holes in a spiral galaxy similar to the Milky Way.At about160 million light years from Earth the pair, discovered with NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, is the nearest known example of such a phenomenon, a NASA release said Wednesday. The black holes, located near the center of the spiral galaxy NGC 3393, are likely the remnant of a merger of two galaxies of unequal mass a billion or more years ago, astronomers said.Previous observations had indicated a single supermassive black hole existed in the center of NGC 3393, but Chandra's X-ray observations were able to discern two.
A small fleet of net-flinging spacecraft could clear every big piece of space junk out of low-Earth orbit within a dozen years, according to a researcher working on the concept.Each spacecraft, known as an ElectroDynamic Debris Eliminator (EDDE), would capture orbital debris in a net, then drag the junk down out of harm's way. The EDDEs would draw their power from the sun and from Earth's magnetic field rather than rely on costly chemical propellants, helping keep costs down, said Jerome Pearson, president of Star Technology and Research, Inc.And the cleanup of low-Earth orbit (LEO) could start happening soon, Pearson added.

A group of scientists led by researchers from the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) has quantified dust and iron fluxes deposited in the Antarctic Ocean during the past 4 million years. The research study published in Nature evidences the close relation between the maximum contributions of dust to this ocean and climate changes occurring in the most intense glaciation periods of the Pleistocene period, some 1.25 million years ago. Data confirms the role of iron in the increase in phytoplankton levels during glacial periods, intensifying the function of this ocean as a CO2 sink.
