A team using the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument suite aboard NASA's Curiosity rover has made the first detection of nitrogen on the surface of Mars from release during heating of Martian sediments.
The nitrogen was detected in the form of nitric oxide, and could be released from the breakdown of nitrates during heating. For the first time in nearly three decades, American scientists have produced a plutonium-238 sample, with a research team at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee announcing the feat in a statement released on Tuesday.

Such a tsunami could have created waves as high as 300 feet (91 meters)—three times larger than the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 that left 230,000 dead.
