Perhaps 1) Khufu needed to align/site his pyramid with/on something natural or manmade on the ground and 2) didn't expect anybody else to build on the Plateau.
It's worth noting, is it not, that Khufu's immediate (?) successor, Djedfre, had his pyramid sited away from Giza?
Could Djedfre have been told by his father not to build a pyramid at Giza?
So few answers - and not one of them mine.
