I think the Exodus happened but I am not sure that Akhenaten was Moses (which apperently means "son of" in Egyptian). I have read a lot about this by a lot of different people and there are a lot of theories including that the Exodus was the Hyskos leaving Egypt after striking a deal with Upper Egypts Pharoph; that the 10 plagues were as a result of Mount Etna exploding; Akenhaten was Moses etc etc.
There is a chap called David Rohl who has put together with other people the idea of a New Chronology (you may already know this so I appologise for teaching you to suck eggs!) which changes the King Lists suffiecently to make the Old testament fit in better on the time line of things like Egyptian invasion of Jesusalem. For me that is a great place to start because if it can be worked out when the Isralites were in Egypt and when they left then there is a much better chance of us working out who Moses was.
I know that I am being a bit vague but it is lunchtime, I am at work and I don't have any of my books with me:-) Hopefully I will be online at home again soon so that I don't have to do things off the top of my head.
