Where is the evidence of proto-mentality? I was drawn to this string to find out how popular science justifies its assumption of supposed "technological, mental or spiritual evolution of humankind."
The oldest extant genes and culture are of San Bushmen in southern Africa. They have technology, mentality, spirituality, art, ritual, emblems, myth, in full ensemble. The oldest extant cultural record is in the Ice Age caves (where we did not live, but some ventured). There is the full ensemble of art, implying technology, ritual, emblems, myth.
I have loads of evidence that our use of the full set of media did not evolve, and will not evolve. We are no more or less spiritual and mental, split between conscious and subconscious, than we ever were.
Leaving aside the question of the chicken and the egg, or how species come to be (perhaps by atmospheric evolution, mutations re-combining in fertilisation, and natural selection converging some results to available energy, while most species mutate only to remain the same).
Please present evidence of human evolution. Where is the cultural record with half-formed works, or half-formed media. Where is the Australian or any other language that is proto- in any way.
The only way to evolve is to become a different species. Which is outside the field of anthropology. Which need not imply any change in archetype, energy, matter, or participation in consciousness layers, or "elevation". Which is outside the scope of the theory of evolution itself. Thus popular science operates outside science.
The link between biology and culture is not missing. Civilisation is the result of population density, not evolution. We are always capable of the full repertoire of technology, but sometimes lack the people or the need to use it.
I hoped for a moment that this string could discuss the problem with how Darwin's set of theories are mis-applied in anthropology and linguistics, but I find only bland assumptions of cultural 'evolution'.
Sirius, I did not comment on you regarding the supposed 'accidents'. I was clearly briefly quoting "CJ Callerman wrote..."
