Hi Simon

I really enjoyed reading the extract. I haven't had time to read through the thread. I love languages. So much is totally lost in translation. Also the same words with the stresses and inflections change the entire meaning, so we must have an inbuilt 'ear' for that. You can see how language is reduced all the time by attempting to read the text messages of our Young. It's predictive text anyway, so it takes them longer to type the emojis, abbreviations and leave out the punctuation...Bless them...:) Some languages don't have tenses, and I don't really know why we do in English. I go to shops in 3 days, last week, never, in a month, all is understood.
I am thinking of the poor children in the Rumanian orphanages, just tied to cots and left. No language development led to severe mental damage. Then the feral children literally raised by animals, rare, but the girl in India is doing well.A baby born deaf is quickly taught a form of communication, it isn't put aside, so instinctively we must know how important for mental well being language is.
The humans we came from presumably were self aware enough to know our bodies make noises, no doubt had a sense of humour- why not, and then there were common to all sounds ? Heard a good programme the other week. One scientist said in observing early humans they would see them talking to, and about, each other UNLESS something else was added to the mix.Call it exponential consciousness ? The DNA scientist said it's all in everyone's DNA, no mutations needed. It depends which bits get activated. I go along with that, and she is Up To Date. That's why she points out we are one Human Race. Always have been Humans. Pretty much as we are today. Very noisy and argumentative...:) Why does a strong emotion make us LOUD ?

I look forward to reading your book. I wonder why some languages became gender specific, especially since some give the feminine to what I would think of as a male occupation. e.g. Nauta for a Sailor, in Latin. In German the Moon is masculine.

Take care
Yve
