FWIW my view is that the mind is intrinsic to the brain -- whether human or otherwise. The function of the brain is to make sense of all received inputs, including (perhaps) those we are not yet aware of. That possibility cannot be ruled out. By the same token, neither can it be assumed. As I see it, the only difference between a human mind and that of any other animal is that the use of language enables us to become conscious (ie to become aware that we are aware; I make a distinction between the two states). As to whether consciousness -- or at least awareness -- is a fundamental property of the universe, it may well be. Why do chemicals react? Because they 'want' to do so -- it is a more 'comfortable' state for them to be in -- and the brain is just a very complex chemical reaction, the side-effect of which we experience as the mind.

I think the jury is out on whether writing/numeracy appeared independently in Egypt and Sumer or whether the word (as it were) got out from one that written marks were in use to represent meaning, and the other developed their own. Either way it seems that the initial purpose was record-keeping, a growing necessity given the task of administering a large city-state. As to the Indus Valley, writing (as opposed to symbolic marks) probably emerged rather later (scholars differ on this, of course) but the Chinese and Mayan systems seem to have developed independently and thousands of years later. In every case though, we see the eventual transition from pictorial (ie analog) to phonetic (ie digital) representation.
