But surely, separation is what the brain does. With or without language, one of the primary functions of any brain is pattern recognition. If other animals are capable of distinguishing between two sounds (eg the famous warning calls of vervet monkeys), why should we humans have needed an extra ability to be able to parse combinations of sound -- to say nothing of the extra puzzle of where or how such a function could have been 'downloaded' from? And all the more so since we already know that some other species are already starting to combine sounds in their calls -- and may well discover more examples when look more carefully, as we have barely scratched the surface of this research so far.

The high hopes once held out for discovering a Universal Grammar that might correspond with Chomsky's putative language module in the brain have already collapsed down to the Minimalist version he calls 'Merge' -- effectively no more than the ability to combine two 'syntactic objects' to form a new one. But this is essentially all that's required to create 'digital' words from 'analog' sound objects -- and if we had the capacity to do that at the phonological level, surely we would have not needed a new capacity to do the same at the syntactic level. Once we had enough words to work with, of course. So if we know other animals are already able to do that in some form, all that is required to get to language is the passage of time, and the virtuous and eventually exponential evolutionary circle of development that comes with it.
