Not a lack of quality, then—and not so short an “extract”. Why was there a lack of space? We may fairly surmise that it was Inner Traditions • Bear & Company set a word limit on the Vyse material and relegated it to appendices: this in a book which was to have been HOAX II. Working within these parameters, Creighton chose to omit from the book some of what’s here. Omitting the lot would have been no loss to the world, in my opinion.

The worst thing here is the sheer, tedious banality of the material. A single discrepancy in dates—proving what, exactly? Forgery? How does that work?

We see eight (8) instances of “mistake” and four (4) of “mistakes”—and this remarkable assertion: “There was no mistake, and he [Hill] painted the inscription exactly as it would have been given to him.” What was allowing this discrepancy into the record, if not a mistake? There was a mistake somewhere. Creighton’s blather about where exactly it was is arbitrary and (in my opinion) delusional, in the strict (clinical) sense of that word.
