Many thanks for your post. Some excellent points in there. With regards to the Tippe-Top Theory, here's a video demonstrating it and explaining some of the physics and mathematics behind it. The Earth slowing down to a stop and then beginning to rotate in the opposite direction simply doesn't seem at all feasible to me. It looks like what you are proposing would break the law of the conservation of angular momentum. Also, if the Earth slowly slowed down to a halt then the sun would bake one side of it to a crisp while the other side would become half a snowball.
