Culture becomes civilisation due to population density. Small Ice Age groups are also 'civilised'. City dwellers remain cultured or rather culturing. The core content of perception and behaviour is constant per species, it is not 'invented' or 'accessed via drugs' or 'diffused' or 'evolved', as I demonstrated in my paper Blueprint, here: [edmondfurter.wordpress.com]
We all have some conscious access to the subconscious and thus to innate nature and thus to archetypal structure. Collectively, about 2% of all populations (as Hancock notes in Supernature) have more innate access. that enable certain functions. San Bushmen, and Siberians, and others, cultivate and enable these people in ritual.
Spirituality is part and parcel of our species. We are also hard wired to formalise spirituality, and all other media, into religion /art schools /icons /calendars /architecture /language differences, all of the purpose of bonding us v them, and for helping and exploiting one another. Thus stylistic elements in culture, which are inherently meaningless, enable appropriation. Thus any cult or religion or experience or expression could not change behaviour or culture.
I am encouraged by Glass Jigsaw's reminder that we do not evolve. I have demonstrated that culture does not 'evolve'. Strip away technology and other features of the cultural maturity curve that rely only on population density, and it becomes clear that individual and social maturity is not evolution. This is an uncomfortable truth. We do not invent or develop or pass on or change anything except style. The most extreme example of styling is language. Strip away the sound allocation differences, and the net meanings are identical worldwide. To the extent that translation has very few difficulties.
Regarding active substances, I have demonstrated that the core content in artworks inspired by ayahuasca, caffeine, psilocybin, DMT, sugar, meditation, etc, all have the same about 100 features, in the same five layers of structure or visual 'grammar'. Ditto for built sites, every supposedly 'different' culture or civilisation builds the same five layers, made visible by the stoneprint model of subconscious re-expression of archetypal structure. Ditto of iconic sets. and Ditto of myths.
The archetypal underworld is not just in Greek myth, calendar, pantheon, ritual and art. I found enough material for three articles on Oracles of the Dead through the ages.
The source of culture and civilisation is not in any substance of medium or place or time. But the question or quest is a step in the right direction. What is the grail, and whom does it serve? The grail is archetype, it serves nature, and we are part of nature.
