In general I can agree with that statement (also depending on the definitions of religion and psychedelics).
But what about the Santo Daime Church?
As the story goes, this religion originated from an apparition of the Holy Virgin ( this you could probably call
a mystical experience) induced by the drinking of what later came to be called "Daime" (ayahuasca).
The apparition instructed the man in question to create a religion and seemed to have been very specific about details (clothing, colours, rituals. hierarchy etc.).
The "Daime" (ayahuasca) is considered a sacrament (a lot of rituals are borrowed from Portuguese/Brasilian Roman Catholicism) that also was an inspiration to create the countless hymns and the dances that are preformed during the rituals.
So in short: DMT gave rise to this religion.
How do you see this example?
