Pb, You believe in synchronicity.
Well, I am not completely sure this is synchronicity, but for me it feels just a bit satisfying:
Further down in the replies R. L. Poole and Susan argue about the gate.
Wikipedia is involved and cranes and engineers.
I happen to have a very wide rural gate, so big trucks can go through. Maybe 20 years ago I put a wheel under it so it could move a bit easier. From time to time as the ground swelled with rain or dried out it moved slightly differently. Concrete under would have been good, but it never happened.
But now, the gate started to scrape on the gravel so I examined the wheel and discovered that the big block of wood it was attached to had rotted out. I spent two days taking it all off, then putting a new block on and attaching the wheel much better than before. So satisfying. It goes like a dream. Yesterday I bought a very long auger piece to drill through the block for the last, long bolt. Should last the rest of my life.
And then the argument here about a heavy gate and how it swung before, but never again. I just wonder how he alone could get it to where it was, let alone drill the hole for a metal shaft. AND balance it so a child could push it with a finger. I also wonder what a truck bearing looks like. Do you know? I look forward to Pool's promised videos.
My wheel is positioned about 2/3 away from where the gate is attached = 1/3 away from where it is opened. Seems to me to be the best place for it to be. Just a feeling.
Seems this Ed had a lot of "feeling" for what he was doing. Knowledge is important in engineering, you have to have certificates, but some instinct is also handy.

But how he lifted everything is the big, big question!
