JazzM, the list of proposed dates for sites and environmental changes in the Gobekli area, in my previous post, are from various sources. Some widely contradict one another.
Regarding drilling under pillars, some pillars stand on bedrock; some on earlier debris. The accepted date is for organic material in mud plaster in a stack of slabs forming a pilaster (pillar attached to a wall), but the plaster was probably made from local soil containing earlier debris. Seasonal camps were on low hilltops, since the Ice Age melt and Younger Dryas were wet due to annual floods from the Zagros and Anti-Taurus ranges. Water birds and reeds appear in the art. The snakes resemble a modern desert species with heart-shaped head, but they could be a semi-aquatic species.
