Imagine there was a trial. The accused name is God and he has been charged with creating the universe, life and all the human deaths and misery that has ever existed on earth. God is saying he is not God – that no one created the universe – and that this is merely a case of miss identification.
So, the trial begins and God’s defence attorney tells the court that his client cannot be God for there is no such thing as God.
The prosecution says but; “Who was there before the universe - and the existence of life on planet earth – the planet where all those horrible murders happened?”
The defence says no one was there – it was just natural laws that brought everything into existence – and that the prosecution has zero evidence for the existence of God.”
The Judge, having some sympathy for God, asked the prosecution to present evidence.
The prosecution says; “I understand your honour that none of us were there when the universe came into existence 13.7 billion years ago. However, I present as evidence the fact that the universe has 100 billion stars in 100 billion galaxies. That is a total of 10,000 million, million, million stars. And even if we can imagine that all those stars came from nowhere then it still needed countless other factors to be exactly right for the universe to come into existence – and the probability of all those factors being exactly right is 1:10120; (that is a probability of 1 to 10 followed by 120 zeros). Then we need to consider that all these stars have an unimaginable amount of heat/energy that must have come from somewhere. In addition, your honour I present as evidence for a creator God the fact that earth has life. Again, the chance that all the elements were somehow accidently right for the creation of life is a probability of 1:1040,000; (that is a probability of 1 to 10 followed by 40,000 zeros) And these unimaginable probabilities do not even start to explain the complexities of life and our human consciousness.
The defence may say that we were not there, that we did not see God create the universe and that we have no evidence – that it was all a remarkable accident. He will likely also say that we are just a bunch of delusional Jesus freaks – that we believe in miracles and we have no evidence. I suggest however, without an alternative explanation, the fact that we have a universe with life and consciousness is all the evidence we need for the existence of God.”
