Entropy (disorder) in a closed system always increases. The Universe has been gradually becoming more disordered since the Big Bang. That is the scientific claim, at least. I'm not sure I fully understand it myself, especially since the evolution of life constitutes the appearance of order. But the big picture is, apparently, that everything is gradually winding down over time. The further back in time you look, the more order exists.
