I think you would find the divide pro and con on ethnogens is still here, but it wanes as the older generation passes.
So many things are this way, the ideas we ingrain and embed into practice do not go easily, and often they require time and the roll-out of new generations to be updated!
Marriage has become an updating item over here. Couples can maintain almost separate worldly lives, and yet pursue a spiritual bonding without religious oversight or blessing. It reduces the costs of lawyers and courts, except in the cases of disputed child guardianship.
(The early Jewish nation had no problems this way, but many of America's problems stem from her hugely multi-cultural base. Her own legacy is only about freedom, and from there the culture and meilu are populatio dependent, no unified front to speak of, no overall cohesion.)
Yesterday was an exercise in charging recalcitrant technology. (I almost ended up with a replacement phone!)
Today is new brake pads and an auto battery checking session. And probably 100°F in the shade. Necessitates camping in coffee shops or bakery cafes. Civilization is a helpful item!
