However if the programme did indeed propose the idea that placing the body or bones of the deceased beneath a bed was meant to ensure that spirits of the dead would remain close to the living, where is the evidence to support this hypothesis? What evidence indicates the people of Skara Brae believed the dead body retained spirit? What was the relationship between the dead remains and the person sleeping above? The point is that we lack such evidence. I suspect the idea presented in the programme would be little more than speculation.
