Are you sure about this, Lew? Today acoustics is a branch of physics--it has far more to do with mathematics than with music itself. In fact, the study of sound goes back to the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, and Mesopotamians...and those are just the ones we know about. That means they were familiar with the relationships between musical pitches, notes, and chords and their mathematical relationships. Harmony, frequency, turning systems...all are inherently mathematical. Some musical theorists even use algebra to analyze compositions.
