I'm not that interested in boxing either, but as the BBC article I linked to and quoted, stated, this world heavyweight fight "captured the world's imagination."

I think it captured the attention of a large number of people because of the dynamics involved and the reminder that sometimes it's not always the larger favourite who succeeds. Sometimes the underdog can succeed against the odds through sheer determination and hard work, which is, all in all, inspirational and would explain why it captured the attention of some people who aren't even generally interested in boxing, like myself.
