Yep. Some people tend to think you are cruel if you actually make the animal behave. My sister spoils the dogs she always gets yet they do behave the majority of the time as she was raised up by the same man I was and he tolerated no animal crossing that line into getting their way when they wanted it.
It didn't matter what kind of animal it happened to be at the time. Cats, dogs, hogs, cows, horses, or humans he treated them all the same. You could get almost anything you wanted as long as you earned it and was respectful.
One time a couple of cows learned that after about 3 days in a pen without food. They would not move out of the way and had knocked the bucket over on two of those days so he just stopped for a couple of days. When he came out on the fourth day they ran up to the gate again and he just turned around and started back to the house until they started bawling. When he turned around they were across the pen and stayed there until he had put the food in the trough. Some animals may be dumb but they are far from stupid when it comes to who the leader is in the group! lol
I said I wanted a motorcycle when I was a teenager. He said fine with me. Go out and get a job, get your own place to live, pay your own bills, buy your own food, and buy whatever mode of transportation you want but while at his house I would not be having a motorcycle. I never did get a motorcycle either. :-)
