Greetings, I thought you would be interested in excerpts of an article written by a friend and brother I know Norton Birdsall, historian of Temple Lodge #16 in Cheshire CT, on the Washington Bible. It was written for the local Scottish Rite newsletter "Echoes from the Valleys", Issue 43, April 2001.

"...After Washington was elected by a unaminous vote of the Electoral College, he travelled for nine days...for the inauguration [in New York]. As the ceremonies were about to begin, George Washington and Robert R. Livingston, New York's chief judge, stepped out on to the balcony of Federal Hall, accompanied by John Adams, Gov. George Clinton and several members of the House and Senate. It was then realised that there was no Bible available for the swearing-in ceremony. A member of the ceremony was Jacob Morton, Master of St. John's lodge #1, New York City. He rushed to the lodge hall nearby and returned with the 14 pound lodge Bible. Washington placed one hand on the Bible and the other over his heart and was sworn into office. Since then, St. John's Lodge has kept, cared for and cherished this historic Bible...It is the custom of St. John's Lodge to carry the Bible to Washington for any president-elect who wishes to use it...Warren G. Harding, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Jimmy Carter and George Herbert Walker Bush [have used it]. George W. Bush elected to use it for his inauguration. The Masons [who escorted the Bible] were hoping to be able to hand the Bible to Laura Bush at the moment it was to be used. At the very last moment it was decided that the weather could be harmful to the Bible and another copy was used. The masons then returned their precious cargo to its display case in New York"

I seem to remember from the coverage at the time that the Washington Bible was present at the inauguration stand, either under it or close by when Bush took his oath. Bush himself, I think, used it more for the connection to Washington. I believe he has had no interest in Masonry, but was and is a member of the Yale secret society Skull & Bones, as is John Kerry (I do not know if Kerry has any connections to Masonry). A good book on this society is Alexandra Robbins' "Secrets of the Tomb". More info on Bush and Islam is in "House of Bush, House of Saud" by Craig Unger. I understand that it will not be published in Britain due to the libel laws, but you might be able to get it from Amazon.com in the U.S. This book provides some very interesting information on the business and political connections of both Bushs' and the Saudis. I believe that Michael Moore's new film Fahrenheit 9/11 will also cover this material.

I hope to post more on Robert's articles soon'
Regards
Martin Ede
