Most research on altering viruses is to see if they can be altered to become vectors to heal genetic diseases. The Wuhan lab was working on exactly that. Corona viruses are not deadly enough to be bioweapons.

So yeah. It was an altered virus. Their containment failed due to insufficient maintenance on the physical storage. A lab tech was infected and became patient zero. Yes the CCP tried to cover it up. Yes they failed and we know.
