Been hearing alot about how the Mayan Calendar ends on this date (21 December 2012) in our presently used calendar (Gregorian?)

Now to convert dates from one calendar to another you have to have a common point of reference. For example, comparing dates in the Jewish calendar to dates in the Gregorian calendar there is some common point at which you know one date lines up with another and hence you can continue on from there.

How does someone do this with our calendar and the Mayan calendar? What is the date used as a common reference and how did the person (s) who figured this out come up with this common date?
