Hi Lynn,

Good to hear from you, and sorry for the delay in replying.

My migraines have been greatly reduced by two shamanic plant hallucinogens. The first, and most important, is Ayahuasca -- which is entirely legal (with its use protected under laws of religious freedom) throughout the countries of the Amazon basin. Ayahuasca is presently illegal in Britain (because it contains the Class A hallucinogen Dimethylryptamine). In the United States the Supreme Court has recently ruled that members of the Unio de Vegetal (an Ayahuasca "church" originating in Brazil) may consume Ayahuasca legally in the context of their ceremonies. There are presently only about 150 UdV members in the US (mainly in New Mexico) but this is nevertheless an extremely important development in the direction of personal and religious freedom.

The second shamanic plant hallucinogen that moderated my migraines is Iboga (the active ingredient is called Ibogaine), which originates in Central Africa and is used by the Bwiti religion of Gabon and Cameroon.

Both Ayahuasca and Ibogaine are thoroughly described in my book Supernatural. Both have powerful (and sometimes distressing) physical side-effects which you must be fit and willing to deal with in order to experience the extraordinary impact that these plants have on consciousness. Of the two, Ibogaine's physical side effects are by far the most severe (I was seriously ill, violent vomiting, dizziness, shakiness for nearly 48 hours). For those with a compromised liver or weak heart, Ibogaine must be absolutely ruled out (there have been deaths). In the case of Ayahuasca you will typically experience an hour or two of vomiting and diarrhoea but usually nothing worse. Those on MOAI drugs, or SSRI anti-depressants such as Prozac and Seroxat MUST NOT take Ayahuasca until these pharmaceutical drugs have been out of their system for -- preferably -- three months. ALWAYS DO A THOROUGH INVESTIGATION FOR YOURSELF ON ANY POSSIBLE SIDE-EFFECTS BEFORE CONSIDERING EITHER AYAHUASCA OR IBOGAINE! This is the responsibility of any adult thinking of putting any powerful medicine into their system.

Now as to the details of my migraines! I have suffered terribly from migraines since the age of 17. By my early 50's I was locked into a horrible cycle of up to 20 migraines a month (sometimes more) which I controlled with the prescription drug called Immigran (in the UK) and Immitran (in the US), wherein the active ingredient is sumatriptan. This category of anti-migraine drugs is known collectively as triptans.

The first time I drank Ayahuasca, in Holland in November 2003, I immediately had a full month of complete relief from migraine. The migraines came back in December 2003. In late January 2004 I went to the Amazon and drank Ayahuasca ten more times over a 4 week period. This time I was free of migraines for a couple of months afterwards, but eventually they came back. Then in July 2004 I took Ibogaine and afterwards enjoyed three months free of migraine, but again the migraines eventually came back. Next adventure was in June/July 2006 (i.e. this year) when I travelled to Brazil to drink Ayahuasca 5 more times. After that I noticed an immediate and dramatic change to my migraine pattern. Specifically between mid-July and mid-December, 5 months, I would "normally" have expected to use upwards of 100 (repeat one hundred!!) Immigran (sumatriptan) injections to control my repeated migraines. Instead I have needed only 2 (repeat two) of these injections in this five month period and as a result the prescription I picked up in July still remains largely unused. The two migraines that I have suffered in this 5 month period were both immediately following large public-speaking events (one in Glastonbury, UK; one in New York) where I was on-stage with a bright light shining pretty much directly at my eyes, and where I gave out a lot of energy to the audience and left the stage feeling drained.

So, yes, I can definitely say that Ayahuasca has almost completely freed me of the lifelong burden of migraine, and the rare residual migraines that I still suffer are manageable.

I will not take Ibogaine again (really painful and physically unpleasant experience) but I intend to continue drinking Ayahuasca perhaps two or three times a year for the rest of my days on this planet. It is a wonderful lifegiving mixture of two Amazonian plants, it is healing in every respect (reduction of migraines being only one aspect of a more general healing that it has worked for me), and in addition it opens a secret doorway to the spirit world that surrounds us all the time but that we are usually not able to see in the normal, alert, problem-solving state of consciousness favoured by our society today.

Interestingly MAPS (the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) has recently been sponsoring research at Harvard Medical School into the use of LSD and psilocybin to control Cluster Headaches (which, as you know, are closely related to migraines). If you want to learn more about the positive health benefits of Ayahuasca search (amongst other things) "the Hoasca Project" on the internet.

I wish you every good fortune in getting migraine out of your life. Those who do not suffer from it have no idea how agonising and debilitating it can be.

Warm best wishes
Graham
