"Nice philosophical point, but a partial one. If we are to consider the ramifications of first contact with an off-world civilization, we have to consider all parameters; a lack of human-like emotional shackles would include those of love, respect, and compassion, as well. The possibilities are extremely wide ranging. "
Thanks. And a good point you make here: perhaps I'm thinking more along the lines of a detached machine-like intelligence - though it would be nice to think that any emotions they have would only be those of our best ones :)
"For instance, simple curiosity, and a desire to observe would be one of the most benign scenarios; but if they then desire to conduct experiments, and tests? If our own 'clinical' attitude toward using other life forms for often destructive (to the experiment subjects) experimentation, and the Nazi and Soviet human experiments is any guide, that would hardly be a benign outcome. If we encounter a civilisation with simple intellectual, sociological curiosity only, we would be rather lucky. "
Certainly, if cattle mutilations are attributed to "tem", perhaps "they" consist of more than one species, some benign and some not so sensitive to what the effect of what they do.
"Other scenarios include a benevolent one of guidance, while still leaving us to figure most things out for ourselves (maybe the most benign scenario of all), to much more fearful ones, such as looking for a new colony, and viewing us as an 'infestation' on a basically nice world; i.e., we should be exterminated. Others include an expanding militant 'empire', leaving us conquered or under a 'protectorate', to a civilisation needing resources found on Earth that we may, or may not, be willing or able to give up. "
Obviously we'd be "sunk", if such an undesirable (intrusive) Contact occurred: but my feeling is that such would most probably already have happened by now, if at all - although one can't totally discount this possibility in the future.
"The point is, that one should avoid BOTH a paranoid AND a worshipfull attitude toward any first contact scenario; we should be reasonably open, but watchful, and careful whenever such an event may occur."
Yes, I fully agree with this, and ideally a Contact should be of parity between both parties. But I would love to be a fly on the wall, so to speak, in any possible curent encounters between military/scientific establishments and them. For perhaps this Contact is already happening, as some say is already so. And maybe that's a governing factor of the evident secrecy and debunking.
"Our own history, as mentioned before, is full of object lessons; I will add the romanized Celts of southern britain, who wanted help against their enemies, the 'wild' Celts--Scots, Picts, Irish. The called in the Saxons, who did help, then dominated their 'friends' Same with the north American indian tribes...there were plenty of groups that sided with the european empires against their amerind enemies...and the rest, as they say, is history. "
Well, this may explain why it is that countries like the USA and the UK maintain a far more secretive policy than others - perhaps it is they who are closer to understanding and contact with at least some of "them" , and would not want, thus, to share such invaluable knowledge with other nations.
Now, whether the ET's would always wish to abide by such an "unfair" arrangement, is another matter altogether. And possibly this is all compounded by not just one, but several different ET species, with different attributes and motives.
British UFO researcher, Gerogina Bruni, met former UK Prime Minster Margaret Thatcher at a social function in 1997, and asked her for her views on UFOs. The "Iron Lady" drew herself up and promptly announced to Ms Bruni,
"UFOs? You must get your facts right, and you can't tell the
"You can't tell the people" - that speaks volumes on the matter of Govt's attutude and secrecy concerning UFOs. For, surely, even if she had simply wished to assure Ms Bruni that it was all a load of hogwash, a forthright character like Mrs Thatcher would have stated just that. But she din't, presumably because she knew that a sophisticated and knowledgeable researcher such as Ms Bruni couldn't be crudely deterred, and an appeal to the researcher's sense of "patriotism" etc instead, was the best response.
Dr Greer's Disclosure Project appeared to be an effort to shed some light on what people from posible "ET projects "know":
From his website:
"The Disclosure Project is a nonprofit research project working to fully disclose the facts about UFOs, extraterrestrial intelligence, and classified advanced energy and propulsion systems. We have over 400 government, military, and intelligence community witnesses testifying to their direct, personal, first hand experience with UFOs, ETs, ET technology, and the cover-up that keeps this information secret. "
An "Executive Summary" of some peoples' accounts and testimonies is here:
