Hi Glass Jigsaw,
The high altitude of Peru and Bolivia can be made more comfortable by spending several days and nights at slightly lower altitude before proceeding to the 12,000-13,00 altitudes of Cusco and Machu Picchu, please stay at motels which offer oxygen to travellers.
It is also legal to purchase coca leaf in Peru which could help overcome altitude sickness by slightly speeding up the heart rate and metabolic rates. (Please seek independent medical advice on this subject)
Many motels will even offer you a free cup of coca tea and if it is black tea that you require be sure to be specific on the subject.
I also found paracetamol(Panadol)useful in overcoming the effects of high altitude such as migraine.
Anyhow if you live in high altitude for longer than a week your body will produce more white blood cells so that your body can absorb more oxygen.
P.S. If you travel to Peru to visit Machu Picchu then also consider visiting Olantaytambo and Puma Punku just over the border in Bolivia.
Cheers Ocka.
