I can't contribute much in terms of theory. However, my ear for music was informed during seven years of childhood spent in India. I also find something familiar and pleasant in ME tunes (as I understand you do as well). I chalk this up also to my early exposure to Indian music (I even like Bollywood tracks, lol).
After listening to the samples, I think there's something very much of what Finney suggests in the excerpt Bent provides. Not only do I hear an echo of India and some far eastern influences; but, interestingly enough, the call of the muezzin as well . . .
Ps. I'm also working my way through Winer's fascinating study into the instrumentality of hate. He's onto something, IMHO, but the in-laws are in town for the Memorial week-end, so I haven't been able to really examine his ideas as I'd like. Hopefully, circumstances permitting, I'll be able to contribute something soon. :)
