Hi Ananda.

As I understand it, barrow, or bairgan, meant a mound where things were hidden, eg: graves and treasure. A mound is a hill, a mountain; and shepherds in Europe are usually found taking their flocks up to higher pastures in the mountains every spring. iow, a shepherd in the central Europe of the Goths would have been a mountaineer of sorts ie: a berger. That's my take.
