I have to disagree that Jesus was an ordianry man but you raised the question of whether he existed or not. I think there is more evidence that he existed than is often given credit for.
I also disagee with the claim that it was unlikely that Jesus didn't marry because of the cultural conventions at the time. Jesus is renowned for flouting cultural conventions and it is also true that many Essenes lived a celibate life, so it would have been possible for Jesus to live without getting married.
Excuse me for the brevity of my post but we've been debating this matter on the forum for ages. We were only discussing it intensely as recently as a couple weeks ago. However, if you have any questions, I'll be delighted to share with you some more of the arguments...
