Theology is an academic field. It's studied somewhat like literature, history, and philosophy--but at a graduate rather than an undergraduate level. The theology student, like any other graduate student must develop and defend an original contribution to knowledge. I'm actually advising a doctoral student in theology in preparation for his defense right now--as a methodologist.
Does this doctoral student believe there is a God that exists, and whose nature is known to exist and therefore can be discussed? If so, does this student understand that every single thought and word about any god is entirely based on the imagination of previous human beings? If the student does not believe in any god, does s/he realise it?

Students receiving a doctorate in theology need not be believers in a religion at all. They are evaluated on the quality and originality of their work.
And yet, there is still zero evidence for any actual god ever. In fact I do know personally one man who came to that realisation just before he achieved his degree in Theology and who has been running a large branch of the British Humanists for many years.
