Well Susan, you are right to be skeptical.

Einstein was hopeful such a theory could be formulated, as was Steven Hawking.

Hawking later realized such would remain forever out of our reach and said:

I'm now glad that our search for understanding will never come to an end and that we will always have the challenge of new discovery. Without it, we would stagnate.

Of course too a TOE would only cover the physical aspects of the universe. From the smallest scales to the largest. And we are currently so far off it is shockingly embarrassing, having only a somewhat intelligible model of normal matter which according to our theories makes up less than 5% of the universe!

To me grand and confident scientific pronouncements of understanding the physical origin of the universe and whatnot can be interesting and all, but a heavy dose of caution is called for.

And we need to remember that physics covers just a narrow slice of 'everything' :)
