Very interesting all the history from several of you.
At school I did not like history, because it was all about a whole lot of nasty people and events, and the same seems to be in connection with the history of Jesus, trying to find out who he really was and said and did.

My own take on it these days is something like this: He was a wise young man, very compassionate too, and he cared about women too and knew what they were about.

His mum was not a virgin, that is something that has been attributed to several famous men. It must be because men like to marry a virgin, so that they are the first ones. Haha. Even if they themselves have had many partners before marriage. Different rules!

Anyway, I think there are several indications that Jesus believed in reincarnation, like when he asked who had sinned, the blind man or his parents, since he was born blind. The possibility it could be him, when would he have sinned? Jesus said none of them had sinned.
Then he asked his disciples who people said he was. Of course, he was Jesus, or his real, Jewish name. But he wanted to know which earlier prophet people took him for.
I think that was when he said "Before Abraham was, I am". Look it up yourself, I can't be bothered. It always annoyed me that he said "I am", not "I was", but it could have some explanation.

I don't think he came to save anybody by being a sacrificial lamb himself.
I think he came to teach something new and teach people to think for themselves.
His main teaching, for me is the universal love, which is not his own idea, but he preached it, and forgiveness, love and forgive like you would like it yourself, and don't be hypocrites.
