Redblade Sorry for the length of this post but this is a big topic. I agree with you to a certain extent, as you say
Religions are mostly the bare bones of what a great teacher like Jesus taught, often formed by a committee when a master/teacher dies, it is basically a way for people to be true to the teachers words and also sadly for some to keep power within a certain group/s in this case Constantine and others. You say its mythology, yes a little bit but it is really mistranslation, misunderstanding, manipulation and a big dollop of Roman propaganda.
For instance they portray Pontius Pilot as a nice guy! But he was recalled to Rome and sentenced to death for 'Cruelty' by Caligula of all people! And so you see it wasn't the Romans being nasty, no, no, no it was the horrible Jews, this had led to Jews being hated all over the world since that time and they didn't really deserve it. As Naveen in the 2nd post of this thread said the word Sin actually means 'to miss the Mark' or error, Plotinus wrote about this, see Plutinos 'The Eneads'
Also we cant seem to find any record of the Jesus character, well after Constantine got involved and wanted to use Christianity, he set about destroying any literature not in line with his agenda and Jesus was probably not quite as Peace loving as one might think, take for instance the cleaned up version of turning over of the money changers tables in the Temple, this was Sedition in Roman times and Rome did not condone trouble makers at all, it would mean the death sentence. Also there were no printing presses or book shops so there wouldn't be that much literature to begotten rid of. There are many other factors in this, the chaos in this time period, like the 3 Jewish/Roman wars which was a terrible genocide, Vespasian became emperor and had the Colosseum built with the proceeds from the plunder and slaves he took.
Also the Romans had a habit of stealing other peoples gods. In the UK in a town called Bath, there is a hot spring and under the Celts it was dedicated to the God 'Sullis', the Romans liked hot springs, so they built it up and dedicated it to the God 'Sullis Minerva', nicely Roman
People will use any thing to gain control and power just like Trump holding a Bible up after ordering violent acts against peaceful protesters, for political gain. It has always been this way. Evangelical millionaires are very Holy, even when it says a rich man cant enter Heaven, so give your money away.
In the Torah there was a law the 'Shmita' that during the sabbatical 7 year cycle, that 'if your brother owes you money, any debts owed are to be forgiven'. Well that got changed “Hillel the Elder, in the first century BCE, made the rule that remittance of debts applies only to debts between Jews, and developed a device known as prozbul in which the debt is transferred to a Beth Din. then owed to a court rather than to an individual, so the debt survives the Sabbatical year. Also land must be left fallow, they got round that law by selling the land for that one year and carried on farming.
The genocide of the Roman wars made many Jews who followed Jesus/James the Just move to Egypt, if you really wanted to find out about early Christian teaching/concepts have a look at works by the Alexandrian's Ammonius Saccas, Origen, Plotinus and Porphyry. It was a very interesting time period.
I am not a Christian, in fact I would probably be seen as a heretic by most Christians. I come at this from 40yrs of doing Raj Yoga and I love history so I have read a lot about different teachers through time. So take the mickey out of the idiots but there are a lot of truths hidden in the Bible.
Of course there are always fisher man's tales and mythology. For instance the Buddha apparently could walk as soon as he was born! where ever he walked Lotus flowers would spring up from the ground!Quote
The Bible talks in riddles and symbolisms and with twisted stories that contradicts itself.
