There is no reason for his science and his personal beliefs to be related--and they aren't. Susan has gone to humanist lectures by a similarly regarded chemist who is an outspoken atheist. I'm sure most any other kind could be found somewhere. He expresses the Texas fundamentalist Baptist perspective very clearly--and that perspective has caused me a great deal of pain over the years. I know how that way of thinking is developed, and it's not crazy at all: it's just not my way.
