That's my view. Once the books of the Bible were established, the Christian dogma of the day was "sealed in" with it. Since that time, there have been countless attempts to edit the dogma to fit in better with new realities.
What's interesting to me is that none of the apocryphal books have ever been formally added to the Bible. In fact, even books that are given deuterocanonical status and accepted or partially accepted by Roman Catholics and/or Orthodox Christians have been completely eliminated in Protestant Bibles.
That leads in the direction of simpler, clearer theologies, but more splitting of Christian believers into alternative dogmas--or details of established dogma.
