Thanks much for this. Looking closer, I see that the initial correction was inserted into a homily on April 3, 1969, fifty years ago. Then, as you probably know, Pope Francis went a step further a few years ago, in 2016 I think:
"Pope Francis took the biggest step yet to rehabilitate Mary Magdalene’s image by declaring a major feast day in her honour on 22 June. His 2016 decree put the woman who first proclaimed Jesus’ resurrection on par with the liturgical celebrations of the male apostles.
“By doing this, he established the absolute equality of Mary Magdalene to the apostles, something that has never been done before and is also a point of no return” for women in the church, said Lucetta Scarrafia, editor of the Vatican-published Women Church World monthly magazine.
Way to go Francis.
When I learned of these things I immediately deleted my change.org petition, not that it would have made any difference of course. In addition to the complete non-response here, I will add that I sent emails out to the headquarters of the Catholic Women's Leagues of Canada and the UK. Never heard back from either, which makes me think two things.
Either the person on the receiving end knew what I now know, thanks to you, and chose not to bother to even reply, likely in the name of her(?) self-interest or...
They didn't know about the redefining of MM, and just blew the whole thing off, thereby indicating a willingness to keep the 1400 year-old debasement going.
It may interest you to know, that while I am Christian, and have a very internalized sense of what that means, that this kind of treatment, or non-treatment, speaks to why I rarely attend church.
The mediocrity sickens me.
