"Blessed are the 'solitary' and elect, for you will find the kingdom. For you are from it, and to it you will return."
Jesus went into the desert for 40 days and 40 nights as well? Did Jesus do this same challenge, I think so, it may have been slightly different in that time in some ways, he probably did not have coffee and a kettle.
In this challenge of the solitary confrontation of the mind/noise maker/satan in the cave we see one of the hardest challenges we could face. How many of us could even be in solitary confinement for say 4 hrs? Our brains would freak out give me something to do!! and we would be 'bored' or should I say our master, our mind, says I'm bored and demands we give it what it craves. The Nag Hammadi texts would have come from a facility similar to St Anthony's as in the film they would have used prayer as a Mantra to focus their minds just like meditation, imo. In the monastery they would NOT let the ordinary monks even go to the caves. It is such an ordeal, a hard fast track approach not to be taken lightly. Jesus was in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights!!
It could easily cause madness, to understand that the mind is not us, challenges everything we've been taught. I saw this in the film in the different stages of experience the vicar went through it got tough and then tougher but in the end he won out and he was peaceful. What do you think?
Thomas 70 Jesus said, "That which you have (with in you) will save you if you bring it forth from yourselves.
