The Gospel of Thomas. 12. The disciples said to Jesus,
"We know that you are going to leave us. Who will be our leader?"
Jesus said to them, "No matter where you are you are to go to James the Just, for whose sake heaven and earth came into being."
So perhaps you might start your discussion by reading James. James was like his brother, there were no Christians at that time, they were both revolutionary Jews, although one could call James a christian as he followed his brother the Christ.
Remember St Paul was called back to Jerusalem to report to James, he was very influential and became temple leader. Funny thing many claim that there is no record in history of Jesus (there are many reasons for this not least the genocide of the 3 Roman Jewish wars 66 bce to 133 bce) but there is plenty about James his brother. It maybe that some over zealous early Christians destroyed any texts left they weren't happy with and so much has been lost. There are other factors but it would be to much to go in to them in this post. Here's a quote from James.
14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?
15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food,
16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that?
17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
I think this is particularly relevant for our times with a child dying every 30 seconds of Starvation, Sickness, dirty water and diarrhea, basically poverty with all its diseases, which includes Terrorism. As Capitalism rises to its goal of hoarding of wealth and so total power. We need the religions to put away there differences and practice what is at the core of them all Love.
