Rather than 'emerge' I would say it was more like a personal revelation. The same "I" when I was in the 5th grade? Yes, definitely according to your description, but no, definitely not for all times prior to these experiences.

All I can offer is attempts at an analogy. One would have you being on a very elaborate movie set, fully informed of the situational context. As such, you know that the movie set is very real. At the same time, you recognize that the set is fully subsumed by and subordinate to a greater reality. I would say that a very similar thing can and does occur in the context of our self-definitions.
