Yes, Jane austen had a one-off talent I think. I'm glad I read them way before the BBC made the TV series, but the latter much enhanced the value of the books.

And I've just remembered one of the books that made me cry when I was young (although reading them today would probably make me wince a bit!!) and that is Little Women, when Meg died. I hope I am right in thinking even then that I thought it was rather overdone!
