I very much disagree. The daily news and evidence of religious leaders all round the world presiding over worship, instructing their members what they should and should not do in order to obey God's laws, the atrocities perpetrated and supposedly authorised by God are surely enough to demonstrate that the God idea is vastly more forceful (i.e. forced by those in positions of religious power) than the one you suggest above.Quote
I suggest that the word god has different meanings for different people. But the basic meaning, I think, is the meaning that people find in their lives. It is what works for them. The idea is very much a part the ‘equiptment’ that evolution provides us for survival. Like lions have big teeth and claws, and cheetah have great speed, we have ideas, god being just one.
And the threat of retribution because of people acting in a way thatis called sinning is still far, far too prevalent.
Maybe that vote in the Republic of Ireland wil be the pebble that causes many ripples to spread out world-wide.
