I've read that our solar system kind of "bobs" up and down crossing the centre plane of the galaxy. Our solar system will be directly on the central plane in late 2012. - insert ominous Mayan music here -
Would it reasonable to postulate that there would be a greater concentration of forces at that point that could cause changes?
