I don't think the objects in the asteroid belt ever made up a planet. I once read that Mars' and Jupiter's gravity was the reason a planet failed to form there.

About Mars, I also read that the Hellas impact forced up the Tharsis Bulge and the stretching of the crust ripped open the Mariner Valley. I don't know if this is the generally accepted theory, though.
