Rocket-plane shoots into space

THE world’s first private, manned rocket-plane has made a successful maiden flight, breaking the sound barrier and marking an important new milestone in the history of space travel.

SpaceShipOne (SS1) was carried into the skies above California’s Mojave Desert aboard a specially designed jetliner before being detached. Its rocket was then fired to blast the spacecraft to a speed of 930mph, or Mach 1.2, and take it vertically to 68,000ft.
