Have a look at the Harmonia Philosophica article I wrote at Wordpress for the "summary" of the Velikovsky case as I understand it. If you put all the things together one does look on a really important case of scientific dogmatism.
All in all science is based on assumptions and it can be no other way, but the moment we forget we use these assumptions we turn into dogmatism. True scientists are ready to change their assumptions any time. It is not only the Velikovsky case as such. Cosmology has a great tradition in dogmatism - see for example the case of the geocentric model and the "principle" that Earth "cannot" (should not?) be at the center of anything and how Hubble changed his conclusions based on his dogmatic views of the cosmos. (see "Earth at the center of the Universe?")
Weird how science progresses through people outside the scientific establishment...
