France angrily recalled it's ambassador to the US and cancelled a gala celebration of the 240th anniversary of French naval participation in the war of independence after the US completed a secret deal with Australia to sell nuclear submarines to that country.

France already had a $50 billion contract to replace Australia's aging fleet of subs over 50 years with diesel-electric subs using French technology. This deal was scrapped by the US/Aussie deal with just hours of warning to France. The deal between France and Australia had been fraught with cost overruns and delays which caused tension between the partners but the secret negotiations between US and Australia caught France by complete surprise.

France has called the action a betrayal towards the US's first ally upon independence. French foreign minister, Jean Yves Le Drain called the secret deal a "stab in the back," and that he was very bitter and angry about the "break up." He also said that "this was not done between allies," and reiterated that it would complicate cooperation in the Pacific region where France still has influence in former territories in Polynesia and South Asia.

The announced deal between the US and Australia also included announcement of a new strategic alliance in the Pacific region between Britain, the US and Australia.

Does anyone else see a the tensions and arms build up in the Pacific as extremely foolish on all sides? The US trying to shore up it's position in the Pacific after losing Afghanistan and the interior lines to central Asia to China?
