Really not scary at all, if we put it into perspective by looking at previous elections and the popular vote.

Biden & Trump @ 93% counted

75,196,516 vs 70,803,881 = 146,000,397 total votes Biden winning by 4,392,635 votes or 3%

2016 Trump & Clinton

62,984,828 vs 65,853,514 = 128,838,342 total votes Clinton won by 2,868,686 votes or 2.2%
(Clinton won the popular vote and the dems didn't melt down with conspiracy theories)

2012 Obama & Romney

65,915,795 vs 60,933,504 = 126,849,299 total votes Obama won by 4,982,291 votes or 3.9%

2008 Obama & McCain

69,498,516 vs 59,948,323 = 129,446,838 total votes Obama won by 9,550,193 votes or 7.3%

2004 Bush & Kerry

62,040,610 vs 59,028,444 = 121,069,054 total votes Bush won by 3,012,166 votes or 2.4%
(Bush beat Kerry but the dems didn't melt down with conspiracy theories)

2000 Bush & Gore

50,456,002 vs 50,999,897 = 101,455,899 total votes Gore won by 543,895 votes or .5% but lost the election.
(and the dems didn't melt down)

In 2016 and 2000 a dem won the popular vote but lost the election. Electors don't always vote according to the party they have pledged too. When they don't vote accordingly, they're called "faithless". And the states differ on their elector regulations.
