That's a pretty large risk for the mere 'distraction' from other problems. India is right on China's border and the one of their neighbors with enough population to be a threat. Nor is Modi the sort to take an insult and back off. Meanwhile, Ladakh is mostly a frozen desert. There is nothing of value to be gained by fighting over an empty plateau at ~10,000 feet. It has no known mineral resources, and even yak herding is not productive on this nearly barren land. I cannot believe that Xi could not have found a better source of 'distraction' if that was what he needed.
